The healthcare sector is particularly resource-intensive; a visit to a modern intensive care unit is enough to illustrate this. However, if we consider the entirety of medical practices, hospitals, treatments and the associated transport volume, it is estimated that around 5% of the CO2 equivalents generated worldwide are attributable to the healthcare sector. Consequently, sustainable thinking and action and the associated reduction in resource consumption should be urgent goals for the healthcare sector in order to take responsibility in the fight against global warming.
